“We were in the middle of the desert,” he says. “My wife was falling asleep, wild dogs are barking outside, and I’m looking through the open mesh into the sky and thinking, ‘How did I get here? How did my life get me to this amazing place?’”
The answer is in the music. What We Want, What We Get flows through a varied terrain from Motown horns to bubbling reggae to impeccably crafted pop, all of it riding a current of irresistible groove. No borders separate the many sides of Dave Barnes, for whom there is no real difference between conveying a message through music and bringing hope to people as far from home as Darfur.
“When I decided to make this record I really wanted to write songs that people could quickly assimilate in to their own life,” Dave explains. “I’m excited because I think this record is the most ‘easily digestible’ of anything I’ve ever written.”

I have heard 'Little Lies' first time live in Ryman Auditorium at the event that supported Compassion International. Dave Barnes performed this song together with Brandon Heath and Matt Wertz. I fell in love with that song at the first hear! The melody, guitars and words are kind of fun giving and so catchy that it just stuck in your head! You really find your self singing it whole day!
'God Gave Me You' is a ballad that Dave wrote for his wife. It's a confession of one - we need someone who would stand beside us at all times.
Lyrics: 'God gave me you for the ups and downs. God gave me you for the days of doubt. For when I think I lost my way there are no words here left to say. It's true, God gave me you.'

'What I Need' speaks about our expectations, but many times things don't go the way we expect (even when we pray about them). But as the lyrics say 'You give me what I need even on the brightest day, even in a hurricane. You give me what I need, even when there's way too much. Even when I am down to dust.'
'That's what I'm gonna do. Laugh it off, move along, get back where i belong. Live my life by leaning on you.'
The song is an encouragement that what we need is to lean on God in every situation and just move on.
'What We Want, What We Get' Chorus: 'Sometimes what we want isn't what we get. Sometimes what we get ain't really what we want. '
Life can seems that way, but at the end when we reflect deeply 'there ain't a thing we need that heaven forgot. It was given.
This song is optimistic and speaks about a different perspective of viewpoint-the positive one. You can look at your life complaining or you can look at it from the positive viewpoint. Really there ain't a thing we need that heaven forgot. It was given! Let's be thankful.
'Someone's Somebody' has a bit of ray of sunshine in it and it brings it right to you. It says that you will be somebody's someone a person that is to be loved, someone out there is waiting for you. Does it feel good to you baby?
'Look So Easy'-catchy, fun melody and tag.
'You Do The Same For Me' (one of my favourites)is a song that gets so close to your heart! It speaks about understanding, sensibility towards each other, we are here to support each other. This song really melts your heart and helps you to reveal your true image.
Lyrics: 'So I'll hold the light in this night so your eyes can see. You do the same for me...'

Generally in 'What We Want, What We Get' Dave plays with the melodies-a great compliment for this! Each song has something special, something specific for that song only. I liked that! Each song has something that will be close to your heart.
It's an easy to listen album and makes your day brighter. Love that! A good album-recommended!
Note: If you feel on the first hear you don't get it so strong, that's fine. Keep listening and you will get it! Some good albums aren't love for the first hear but after you come to like them, you can't stop! Did you ever experienced that too?
